Holiday Travel Conditions Looking Good in St. Louis

AAA and INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, predict travel times in the most congested cities in the US during the holiday week could be as much as three times longer than the optimal trip.

AAA says this holiday week, from Wednesday to Sunday, will be the busiest Thanksgiving travel week in 12 years.

On the eve of the holiday travel season, the price of unleaded gasoline in the metro Augusta area averaged $2.28 per gallon - roughly 18 cents per gallon more than motorists this time previous year, according to AAA data.

The Thanksgiving travel period is considered Wednesday through Sunday.

That's a more than three percent increase over past year, making it the busiest Thanksgiving since 2005. "But the biggest percentage growth - a 5 percent increase - is taking place at the airports". The number of travelers is expected to represent the highest travel volume in the US for Thanksgiving since 2005.

Almost 60 million Americans are expected to travel this Thanksgiving - the highest number in more than 10 years, according to AAA. Travelers can expect to spend any "flight savings" on vehicle rentals.

Lisa Torbic, senior public information officer for NJ Transit, said holiday public transportation travel tends not to be about volume of customers as much as the travel times.
