Business leader welcomes Government's business strategy

"Powered by new technology, new industries are being created, existing ones changing and the way we live our lives - as workers, citizens and consumers - transformed".

"We also look to the Government for a similar commitment towards a digital inclusion partnership, using the scale and reach of the industry to improve digital literacy across the United Kingdom workforce. This white paper is a great start".

It says that construction is now expensive and too many buildings waste energy.

Construction was one of 11 industrial sector left in the race for deals.

'Work will continue with other sectors on transformative sector deals, ' said the white paper.

The strategy "heralds a new approach to how government and business can work together to shape a stronger, fairer economy", Mrs May said in the foreword to the document. This is expected to reduce environmental impact, improve efficiency and reduce whole life cost of new projects and the buildings to ensure new homes, schools, hospitals and major transport projects that are needed are built. "With its new industrial strategy, the Government must now put its money where its mouth is and support the national workforce in unlocking its own potential".

Britain launched an industrial strategy on Monday as it prepares to leave the European Union and faces uncertain economic prospects.

The paper also points to the new Bioeconomy Strategy, due early in 2018, which will "set out a framework for growth in the sector to develop new low-carbon bio-based products andprocesses".

"Both AI and mobility are named in a series of so called 'Grand Challenges" which also include "clean growth" and an "ageing society".

Four "sector deals" aim to replicate the growth of the auto industry in recent years by encouraging investment into highly productive areas including life sciences, construction and artificial intelligence.

It will form part of a zero emission road transport strategy to be published in the coming months, with a further £40 million pledged to support research and development of on-street and wireless charging technologies.

The first phase includes a £45 million "Battery Institute" competition to establish a centre for battery research to make technology more accessible and affordable.

Towards this goal, a new programme entitled "Prospering from the energy revolution" will be launched where local smart energy systems will be developed and action on the smart meters rollout will be enhanced.

The move aims to build on an announcement by Theresa May last week that the Government's ambition is to boost the level of investment in research and development, rising to 2.4 per cent of GDP by 2027.

Reaction, including from the RTPI, to the Industrial Strategy white paper can be found here on The Planner.

Looking to future government publications, Hayler continued: "The forthcoming resources and waste strategy must set out a clear long-term plan for how this can be achieved, and must put in place the right policy levers to ensure we have the right infrastructure to deliver greater resource productivity for the benefit of the United Kingdom economy and environment".
