Tiger Woods hails latest comeback as 'great'

Nassau (Bahamas), Dec 1 (IANS) Fourteen-time major victor Tiger Woods shot a three-under-par 69 as he returned at the Hero World Challenge following nine months out injured.

Another birdie at number 11 had him six-under for the day before he three-putted the par-three 12th hole for his first bogey of the round.

That left Woods tied for 10th at four-under 212, 10 strokes behind leader Charley Hoffman, in his first tournament in almost 10 months following spinal fusion surgery. In previous returns, Woods could be seen holding back or showing signs of pain.

"For me, I thought it was great", said Woods, who underwent spinal fuson surgery in April - his fourth back operation in the space of three years - after withdrawing from his most recent tournament in February in Dubai after an opening 77. To come out here and score like I did was nice.

Woods' booming 300-yard opening tee ball flirted with a sandy waste area on the left side of the fairway and - maybe in a nod from the golf gods - got a good kick that bounced the ball into the fairway, leaving him 99 yards to the hole.

The 14-time major champion's challenge faded on Saturday, though, as he endured an almighty struggle with the wind up on the front nine to slip back, hitting the turn in 40 to drop to three under.

Fleetwood, who is making his debut in the event before getting married in the Bahmas on Tuesday, was bogey-free as he took a one-shot lead over American duo Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar.
