Qualcomm make their move on Intel with Snapdragon on Windows

There are now 238 million Xiaomi mobile phones powered by Qualcomm processors.

It wasn't just ASUS turning up to the Snapdragon 835-powered Windows 10 laptop party, but HP too with their new Envy x2 laptop.

That all changes today with the introduction of always-on, always-connected PC powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon technology, and Windows 10.

HP promises an "impossibly thin" but "incredibly durable" deisgn that packs up to 20 hours of battery life and is powered by the same Snapdragon 835 processor and Snapdragon X16 LTE modem for that always-connected goodness.

While you'll obviously have WiFi too, our expectation is that you're probably going to struggle to buy a NovaGo or ENVY x2 without activating a data connection at the same time.

The Snapdragon 845 is the spiritual successor to the Snapdragon 835 in more ways than one: the 835 used a 10nm manufacturing process, and the 845 is expected to use a more refined version of the same process. The NovaGo offers up to 22 hours of battery life (video playback), up to 30 days of standby time, and comes with support for Windows Ink, Windows Hello, and Cortana.

Following Myserson on stage to put meat on the bones of the announcement, was Asus' Jerry Shen, announcing the Asus NovaGo - an ultraportable 2-in-1 convertible laptop running Windows 10.

Better yet, ASUS is pricing the new NovaGo at just $599 for the 4GB/64GB storage model while the 8GB/256GB storage model is $799.

Meanwhile, the HP ENVY x2 will borrow the detachable form-factor of the PC maker's Spectre series.

HP didn't provide pricing on the new Envy x2 but they did have a release window of spring 2018. It's unclear what form-factor it'll adopt, though given it has a large Yoga line-up of 2-in-1s with rotating hinges, that seems like a safe bet. It's only, arguably, with the very latest chipsets that we've reached the point where that sort of combination is practical.

Contrary to what you might expect, the new Windows 10 ARM computers don't look hugely different from their Intel counterparts. And will their competitive price tags be unduly offset by egregious data fees?

Microsoft Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group Terry Myerson. In other words, precisely what one would expect from the next generation flagship chip from the company.
