Amazon and Google are fighting, and that means consumers lose

Amazon's decision of not selling the Google Chromecast and Apple TV (both of which have dedicated YouTube apps) has further strained the relation between Google and Amazon.

- Universal Search now supported - search for Prime videos using iOS search (US, CA, AU, NO, & SE only). In fact, it was at WWDC 2017 in June that the company first told users to expect Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV. You get voice searches through Google's Assistant - playback controls with some apps, weather info and some data you might never think to ask a TV, such as flight status.

The problem in the past several years is that Apple TV has been more expensive than the competition while being stuck in the 1080p world and lacking access to a key streaming service - Amazon Prime Video. Amazon kicked the Chromecast, Google's television player, off its retail website in 2015, along with Apple Inc's TV player.

Decent app for streaming or downloading Amazon Prime Video content to your smartphone.

For those willing to abandon Fire TV, just about any other device will play YouTube. "The question is, can you get it on there with acceptable business terms?"

That latter stipulation has been frequently criticised by streaming services, including music platforms like Spotify, because Apple's cut from the subscription would take away those companies' entire (best case scenario) profit margin.

Apple is a little late to the party when it comes to 4K. Amazon joined Apple TV on Wednesday. Where movies are not available for streaming via a Prime subscription, the app often says that the content can instead be purchased or rented. While Google's stock price has grown 198% since December 2012, Amazon's has soared 352.6% in the same period.

Streaming devices allow users to stream videos from platform such as Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, and Amazon Prime on its TV. Most of the companies making these devices also have their own streaming services.

These kinds of disputes can be confusing for consumers who probably just want to watch the things they like on the devices they've bought. Now they are not available direct from Amazon, although earlier this year the company did briefly list the latest version of the device for sale on its United States site (but it has since been removed).

The Fire TV loses access to its YouTube app on January 1, Google said.
