Amtrak train derailment witness who helped victims describes scene at deadly crash

At least six people were killed by the derailment of an Amtrak train near Tacoma in the U.S. Washington state Monday morning, local authorities said.

Amtrak Cascades train 501 was taking its inaugural run down a new route today outside of Tacoma, Washington.

Passenger and railway buff Chris Karnes described to the Seattle Times the horror that unfolded on the doomed train.

'Next thing, we're being slammed into the front of our seats.' People kicked out windows to escape, he said.

Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, told the Washington Post the highway will be closed for a long period, calling it a "pretty horrific" crash.

It said the injured people were receiving treatment at Good Samaritan Hospital, Allenmore Hospital ad Tacoma General Hospital in the Pierce County, Washington State on the USA west coast.

In 2015, an Amtrak train going far over the designated speed for a stretch of curves in the track in Philadelphia derailed, killing eight.

It's still not clear what caused the train to derail but the The National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. All but one of its cars and engines jumped the tracks, and at least one fell to the roadway below.

A conductor in one of the two engines on the train placed the emergency call.

"There were a bunch of people who wanted to be a part of this historic moment and they were on board the train this morning headed for Portland", he said.

He was unhurt and is now near the medical tents set up in a median area between north- and sound-bound Interstate 5, just south of DuPont, Washington. "We got off after shooting the video". The trains were expected to reach speeds of 79 miles (127 kilometers) per hour through the densely populated area with the improved systems and track.

Daniel Konzelman and his girlfriend Alicia Hoverson were driving to work December 18, 2017 when they came across a fatal Amtrak train derailment in Washington state.

In a tweet, President Donald Trump said: "My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the train accident in DuPont, Wash. I saw a little bit of both", Konzelman said.

At the time, analysts said positive train control technology could have prevented the accident.
