Assange's handle re-emerges after 'Twitter oddities' & weird US Navy post

The account reappeared without loss in number of tweets posted but having lost a considerable number of followers.

In a Christmas Day mystery, the official Twitter account of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was deleted.

Then at 1.5am (AEDT), he popped up again with a tweet showing a cartoon of Santa making a Wikileaks "good or bad" list.

However, Assange's previous Tweets - and habit of posting personal information about individuals - might've caused him to run afoul of Twitter's regulations.

The mysterious disappearance - and re-appearance - of the account proved even more freakish when the U.S. Navy on Christmas morning mistakenly tweeted out Assange's full name, in quotes, and nothing else.

The post was a quote from Assange himself, which read: "A knowledgeable public, is an empowered public, is a free public". The unverified account has since been suspended from Twitter.

The new account reportedly said that Twitter has deleted Assange's official handle, and just before a major news story was to be broken out.

Assange, who's been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012, uses the social media messaging service to communicate with the outside world.

Did they raid him? The whistleblowing site has also confirmed that Assange is safe and well, despite some Twitter "oddities".

The account does not bear a blue verification mark, something Assange had been asking the higher echelons of Twitter for since this March.
