Doctor Who: Watch Peter Capaldi Regenerate Into Jodie Whittaker

During the Christmas episode, Twice Upon a Time, Capaldi meets with the first Doctor to save an army captain. Ultimately, The Hollywood Reporter said the Doctor will not regenerate with an audience (as the Doctor usually does) and will turn into the next incarnation while alone in the TARDIS, the Doctor's time-traveling ship/police box.

I've been a fan of Whittaker's for years for her work on Broadchurch (the show that new Who head writer/showrunner Chris Chibnall is also coming from), and I can't wait to see where (and when) she will go next.

Capaldi transforms into Whittaker and as the regeneration finishes, she looks around and says "Oh brilliant". In fact, it was an unprecedented episode as the new Doctor is played by Jodie Whitaker, marking the first time a woman has played the famous Doctor. "I've obviously seen her tiny bit at the end of the Christmas special".

Whittaker will fully begin her role next year alongside Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole.

When she was appointed, Whittaker told fans not to be "scared" by her gender.

The emotional instalment co-starred David Bradley as the original Doctor, who re-enacted scenes from a 1966 episode of the long running sci-fi series.

In the absence of any substantial footage of Whittaker yet, we're left to speculate that perhaps the current Doctor had putting himself in a woman's shoes on his mind, so unremittingly unreconstructed were the 1960s-dwelling First Doctor's attitudes.

However, really, the mysteries around the all-seeing Testimony, their Chamber of the Dead and Gatiss' character's real identity fade into the background once the two Doctors start bickering. Actress and singer Sharon D. Clarke will also be joining Season 11 in a yet-to-be announced recurring role, reported The Radio Times. And though we don't get to see very much of Whittaker here - as is always the case when a new Doctor is introduced at Christmas - what we've got is enough to whet our appetite, leaving us cautiously optimistic about the future of the show.
