Nintendo Switch 64GB Game Cartridges Delayed Until 2019

Nintendo Switch 64GB Game Cartridges Delayed Until 2019

The Nintendo Switch has brought the iconic video game company back into the conversation among Sony and Microsoft when it comes to next-generation systems. Nintendo has posted strong sales numbers and has sold over 10 million consoles in 9 months, but news of them reportedly delaying 64GB cartridges might throw a wrench in that success according to a Wall Street Journal report. So far, third-party publishers and developers have had to rely on 32GB, which in itself is already "ridiculously expensive" in comparison to the 50GB Blu Rays that rival consoles use. But The Wall Street Journal reports that Nintendo won't be ready for another year, in order "to ensure quality".

While this might be a problem for the American developers of Nintendo Switch games.

ant2506 / PixabayWhat's the need for 64GB Nintendo Switch cartridges? With games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey hitting best of 2017 lists left and right, it's jam-packed with great games and ports of other titles that people have clamored for. But developers who are looking to put out cross-platform releases are used to having up to 50 GB of breathing room - and a lot of players expect them to fill it. If you know that a game is going to require more downloads anyway, you might just download the whole thing instead of picking up the physical release.

KitGuru Says: While I'm happy to pay a bit of a premium to game on the go, it seems like the increasing costs of storage while also paying more for cartridges will impact on the Switch's selection moving forward. On top of all this, you have users fretting over their memory usage and having to shell out more cash for upgrades. Physical game cards provide the benefit of additional storage so that developers and users don't rely exclusively on the Switch's internal storage space. And it absolutely must avoid the disgusting working relationship it had with third-parties in the disastrous Wii U-era.
