Florida minimum wage set to rise Monday

Under the new program, all employees who work in the private sector will be eligible for 12 weeks of paid family leave when caring for an infant, a family member with a serious health condition or to relieve family pressures when someone is called to active military service.

The saying, "every dollar counts", will be tested again, as Ohioans once again see a raise in minimum wage next year.

For fast-food workers outside of New York City, the minimum wage will rise to $12.75 an hour on Dec. 31, 2018, $13.75 an hour on Dec. 31, 2019 and $14.50 an hour on Dec. 31, 2020.

Starting Monday, small companies - those with 25 or fewer employees - will have to pay workers at least $10.50 an hour, up from $10. Each year, the wage is to increase with a rate of inflation.

The voter-approved law originally required tipped employees like waiters and waitresses to make minimum wage regardless of how much they made in tips.

The 15-cent increase for 2018 is the largest hourly increase since 2012, when the wage rose by 36 cents an hour, according to the Department of Economic Opportunity. And that is the same rate for smaller companies with annual gross receipts of $305,000 or less per year, after January 1, 2018. If pay rates had increased in parallel with those of chief executives, then it should have been £12.74 an hour, which works out to nearly £12,000 more than people are now paid. The increase will be phased in over a longer period for workers in the rest of the state.

"The minimum wage increase, new paid family leave requirements and the state's proposed employee scheduling regulations are concerning to employers in the area", he said. There is no cost to employers.
