Time's up for Hollywood harassment, say leading actors

Three hundred of Hollywood's most influential and powerful women have launched a campaign to fight sexual harassment in the wake of the Weinstein scandal.

Now, the women of Hollywood are taking it a step further and coming together for a new initiative, Time's Up.

The letter, which is aimed at "every woman... who has had to fend off sexual advances", goes on to say that such harassment can often continue because "perpetrators and employers never face any consequences".

Emma Stone and Shonda Rhimes are amont the women who teamed up to create Time's Up, which aims to combat sexual harassment in the workplace.

A legal defense fund, backed by $13 million in donations, to help less privileged women-like janitors, nurses and workers at farms, factories, restaurants and hotels-protect themselves from sexual misconduct and the fallout from reporting it.

The fund will be housed at and administered by the National Women's Law Center, a women's rights legal organization, and managed by Christina M. Tchen, former Chief of Staff to Michelle Obama.

It has already overseen the creation of a commission, announced in December, that is tasked with creating a blueprint for ending sexual harassment in show business.

Time's Up also wants to put forth legislation to penalize companies that turn a blind eye to harassment, as well as discourage nondisclosure agreements meant to keep victims quiet, according to the Times.

Time's Up also is backing the movement for women to wear black, in solidarity with those who have been sexually harassed, at Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony.

Shonda Rhimes-a leading member of the effort and executive producer of several television series, including "Grey's Anatomy" and "How to Get Away With Murder"-says a key component of the effort was making sure that women in those more vulnerable situations and without the name recognition of famous actresses or directors were made central to the effort".

The group insisted that more women must be brought into positions of power and leadership, while every woman should have equal benefits, opportunities, pay and representation.
