Gruden returns to Oakland as Raiders head coach

It all becomes official at a Tuesday press conference, the Raiders said in a statement released Saturday evening, shortly after Gruden and boothmate Sean McDonough called the Titans' win over the Chiefs.

Gruden has worked as a "Monday Night Football" analyst since 2009 and also gained popularity through his "QB Camp" series on ESPN, interviewing quarterback prospects.

Gruden, who reportedly has agreed to a 10-year contract worth an estimated $100 million, responded by basically saying it's not a done deal before quickly deflecting to the game at hand.

The worst-kept secret of the week has been confirmed: Jon Gruden will return to coach the Oakland Raiders. He served in that role from 1998 through 2001, before being traded to Tampa Bay. He is the second-youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl in National Football League history, winning a ring at age 39 in his first season with Tampa Bay.

The Raiders fired Jack Del Rio as head coach after a disappointing 6-10 mark.

Gruden, 54, is set to return to coaching after an absence of almost a decade.

A top priority for Oakland's next head coach will be re-establishing Carr, who struggled this past season.

Besides the emotional pull of coming back to the franchise where he made his name, there is cold logic behind the Raiders' pursuit of Gruden.

Regardless, Gruden is a terrific offensive mind and he has only gotten more knowledgeable since stepping away from coaching. Late owner Al Davis hired Art Shell in 2006, 11 years after firing him the first time.

That led to the decision to fire Del Rio following his third season and go hard after Gruden. The team went 30-34 in his four seasons, making the playoffs twice and winning one game before retiring again.
