Egypt's Mohamed Salah Named African Footballer of the Year

The Egyptian shrugged off competition from the 2016 victor Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang who plays for German side Borrusia Dortmund and Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane for the flagship award of the night.

In Salah's 60 official games in 2017 for Egypt, Roma and Liverpool, he managed 58 goal contributions - 39 goals and 19 assists. Egypt had been absent from the World Cup for 28 years.

He also had a hand in all seven of the goals that took the Pharaohs to their first World Cup since 1990 - assisting two and scoring five, including the stoppage-time penalty against Congo that saw them qualify them for Russian Federation.

"I want to tell them to never stop dreaming, never stop believing".

While the attacker was ruled out of the Merseyside derby in the FA Cup third round as he collected his award in Ghana's capital Accra, Salah was still all smiles with his prize on a flight back to England. "I had wonderful moments at Roma and Liverpool", Salah remarked after receiving the award.

Salah had bagged a number of awards this season such as the BCC African Footballer of the year and Arab player of the year. He netted the stoppage time penalty against Congo, which sent the Egyptian team to the world cup competition.

He flopped with Gabon, though, failing to take the 2017 Cup of Nations hosts past the first round and shunning several World Cup call-ups as Gabon failed to qualify.

Zambian youth player Parson Dhaka was named the youth player of the year, whilst Moroccan team Wydad Athletic Club was the 2017 club of the year.

RedBull Salzburg of Austria and Zambia forward Patson Daka, 19, won the young player award after enjoying a breakout season for loan club FC Liefering and country.

"We are happy to play together. They are evaluated after every match and the best are designated matches like the CAF Champions League final".
