Fire officials investigating cause of Redding apartment fire

A Redding, Calif., man set his apartment ablaze on Sunday after attempting to kill a giant spider with a torch lighter, according to the Redding Record Searchlight.

Fire officials say one of the men who lives in the apartment found the spider in an upstairs bedroom.

The burning eight-legged creature ran onto the mattress which quickly caught fire and spread to drapes in the bedroom, Redding Searchlight reported.

The fire caused about $11,000 in damage.

In December, a woman tried to kill bedbugs in her Cincinnati home with alcohol that ignited near an open flame, causing $250,000 in damage and displacing 10 people.

Wolf spiders can grow up to the size of a human hand, though many sub-species are much smaller.

Everybody was able to get out safely but Redding Fire Battalion Chief Rob Pitt said the apartment is now uninhabitable.

The fire, which started shortly before noon in the 2500 block of Waldon Street in downtown, was extinguished within 20 minutes, Pitt said.

As for Wisegarver and the two men living in the apartment, they are going to have to find another place to live.

Wisegarver said they had already been considering moving out but this incident had just sped things up a bit.

"We'll make it work", she added.

"Call an exterminator if you have spiders. and don't try to burn them", Redding Firefighters advised.
