Google could turn the next Pixel's touchscreen into a speaker

Google has quietly bought a United Kingdom startup named Redux that uses vibrations to turn phone and tablet displays into speakers, reports Bloomberg.

According to regulatory filings, the transaction, as a part of which Google's United Kingdom subsidiary bought all the shares of Redux holding company NVF Tech Ltd., was completed in December previous year.

The technology, developed by Redux, eliminates the necessity of small speakers in mobile devices. Google declined to comment on the price and details of the deal.

Google - based in California - has secretly acquired a tech start-up company based in Cambridge, UK that could turn any surface into a speaker.

According to filings, Google took control of the startup back in August and then subsequently shut down the company's website.

When Apple Inc. (AAPL) ditched the standard 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone, and it said the reason was "courage"? that wasn't the reason, the actual reason was simple: in the ongoing fight to make thinner smartphones that pack in more and more tech, space is at a premium. Google might also use the acquisition to improve its future handsets' haptic feedback. Redux had managed to raise a total of $5 Million prior to the acquisition but the company has not revealed how much it paid to acquire the startup. Redux's technology uses vibrations with displays for a variety of different things, and the most notable use of this is the ability to harness these vibrations to turn displays into functioning speakers. Needless to say, the tech that helps integrate smartphone speakers within the display will be invaluable for Google or any other smartphone manufacturers.

At CES 2018, Google mainly focused on promoting its smart speakers and its new line of Smart Display devices, its direct competitor to the Amazon Echo Show.
